How to Tell If Your Main Sewer Line Is Clogged

Your main sewer line is probably clogged if several drains are slow at once, a toilet gurgles when a sink drains, or water comes up in the tub or shower when you flush. Check your outdoor cleanout: standing water there usually points downstream, often to the public side. Stop using water and call your sewer agency first.

Step by step

  1. Stop running water: no laundry, dishwasher, showers or flushing until you know where the clog is.
  2. Note which fixtures are slow. One fixture points to its own drain; several, especially the lowest ones, point to the main line.
  3. Find your cleanouts: a capped pipe near the house and, in many areas, a second one near the sidewalk or street.
  4. Put on gloves and loosen the cleanout cap slowly. If water seeps out as you loosen it, the line is full; stop and leave it closed.
  5. Look inside. Water standing in the property-line cleanout points downstream; a dry cleanout means the clog is between it and the house.
  6. If you're unsure, run a little water from one sink while someone watches the cleanout, as the City of Lincoln suggests.
  7. Call your sewer agency first. If it finds its side clear, call a plumber to clear your private line.

What are the warning signs of a clogged main sewer line?

The clearest sign is trouble at more than one fixture at the same time. HomeGuide and Angi list these symptoms (HomeGuide, Angi):

  • Several drains slow or backing up at once.
  • Gurgling from a toilet or drain when another fixture runs.
  • Water coming up in the shower or tub when you flush.
  • A sewage or rotten-egg smell near drains or the cleanout.
  • Water standing in the outdoor cleanout.
  • A soggy, sunken or always-wet patch over the sewer line.

Is it one drain or the main line?

Count the problem fixtures. A single slow sink or shower is almost always a branch clog, usually hair, soap or grease close to the drain, and a plunger, trap cleaning or hand snake often fixes it.

When the lowest drains back up first, wastewater has nowhere to go: that's the main line. Running the washer or dishwasher only pushes more of it into the house.

What does the outdoor cleanout tell you?

It tells you which side of the line the clog is on, which tells you who to call. The City of Lincoln puts it simply: if water is standing in or overflowing from the property-line cleanout, call the city; if that cleanout isn't backing up, the blockage is in your private line and you need a plumber (City of Lincoln).

Davis uses the same logic. Its crews check the main and, where a service lateral cleanout exists, the lateral; if that cleanout isn't backed up, the cause is most likely in the resident's section (City of Davis). In SacSewer's area, its cleanout near the street often has a relief valve that lets sewage exit outside instead of in the house during a backup in SacSewer's pipe (SacSewer).

What is a belly in a sewer line?

A belly, or sag, is a low spot where part of the pipe settled and lost its downhill slope. Water and solids pool there, so the line clogs at the same spot again and again. Pinellas County lists a sag or lack of slope as a lateral defect and notes Orangeburg pipe is especially prone to bellying (Pinellas County). Cleaning clears it for a while; a camera inspection finds it, and re-laying that section fixes it.

What causes main sewer line clogs?

Grease, wipes, roots and aging pipe. The City of Sacramento says cooking grease solidifies in pipes and forms "fatbergs" in city sewers (City of Sacramento), and SacSewer says even "flushable" wipes bind with roots and grease into blockages (SacSewer).

Age matters too. Santa Barbara's lateral program says homes built before 1970 most likely have clay, cast iron or Orangeburg laterals, where roots enter at failed joints and pipe can crack, separate or collapse (City of Santa Barbara).

What should I avoid doing?

A main line clog is not the time for experiments. Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Pouring chemical drain openers into a backed-up line; Poison Control warns they can splash back and cause serious burns (Poison Control).
  • Running the washer, dishwasher or shower to "push it through."
  • Renting a powerful cable machine for an old clay or Orangeburg line without knowing its condition.
  • Paying for work near the street before your sewer agency checks its side.

What happens when the plumber arrives?

Expect the plumber to open the line through a cleanout with a cable machine, then run a camera to see why it clogged. If grease or sludge lines the pipe, they may suggest hydro jetting. Ask for the video, the distance to any defect, and a written total before any repair. To be connected with an independent local plumber, call (916) 712-7030.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my toilet gurgle when the washing machine drains?
Gurgling usually means air is being pushed through the toilet's water seal because water can't flow freely down the line. When a big flow like a washer drain hits a partly blocked main line, the trapped air escapes through the nearest fixture. HomeGuide lists gurgling as a common clog sign. Check the cleanout.
Is a slow drain in every bathroom always the main line?
Usually, but not always. If only the upstairs bathrooms are slow, a shared branch or a blocked vent may be the cause. If the lowest drains in the house are backing up, the main line is the likely culprit. A plumber can tell which with a cable run or a camera inspection.
