Hydro Jetting in Sacramento

Hydro jetting sends water at high pressure through a sewer or drain line to scour off grease, sludge, scale and fine roots. It cleans more thoroughly than a cable snake, but it isn't right for every pipe, so older lines should get a camera check first. What is hydro jetting?

Hydro jetting is pipe cleaning with water instead of a cable. A plumber feeds a hose with a special nozzle into the line through a cleanout, and jets of high-pressure water blast buildup off the pipe walls while pulling the hose back.

It's the same basic tool sewer agencies use on public pipes. SacSewer cleans the lower laterals it owns with trucks carrying high-pressure jetting nozzles, and uses larger "hydrovac" trucks with a big water tank and pump when roots or debris cause a blockage (SacSewer).

Is hydro jetting better than snaking?

For grease, sludge and scale, usually yes; for a quick fix on a simple clog, a cable is cheaper. HomeGuide notes that snaking punches a hole in the clog rather than removing all the debris, so lines can re-clog faster, while jetting removes grease, soap scum and mineral deposits from the pipe walls (HomeGuide).

HomeGuide also says jetting is often needed for large tree roots, compacted sewer sludge and grease buildup, while snakes and power augers handle hair, food, toilet paper and small roots well. Many plumbers use both: a cable to open the line, then a jetter to clean it. See the comparison table below.

Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?

It depends on the pipe, which is why a camera inspection should come first on any older line. HomeGuide says pipes over 40 years old or showing deterioration may not be good candidates, and Fixr warns that the water pressure can damage old pipes and cause leaks (Fixr).

That matters in the Sacramento area, where many older homes still have their original lateral. Santa Barbara's lateral program says houses built before 1970 most likely have clay, cast iron or Orangeburg pipe (City of Santa Barbara). Orangeburg is the biggest worry: the City of Tempe notes it flattens as it ages and can be further damaged by cleaning tools. Davis makes a similar point about its own equipment, which is built for clay pipe and can damage other materials (City of Davis).

When is hydro jetting worth paying for?

Jetting earns its higher price when a cable only buys you a few weeks. Ask about it in these situations:

  • A kitchen line that keeps clogging with grease, the problem SacSewer says spikes during holiday cooking (SacSewer).
  • A main line that clogs again soon after being snaked.
  • Fine roots that a cutter leaves behind, after the larger roots are cut out.
  • Before a camera inspection, when buildup hides the pipe's condition.
  • Sludge or scale in a long, low-slope run.

How much does it cost to hydro jet a sewer line?

National guides put sewer line jetting at a few hundred to about $1,400, with outliers on both ends. These are national figures from 2025 and 2026, not Sacramento prices.

Angi's 2026 data averages $475, with a range of $100 to $2,000 (Angi). HomeGuide lists $600 to $1,400 on average, and Fixr lists $250 to $1,000 to jet a sewer line (Fixr). A camera inspection beforehand adds about $125 to $500 by HomeGuide's estimate, and Angi says root removal can add $100 to $600. Having an outdoor cleanout keeps costs down, since the jetter goes straight into the main line.

What should I ask before someone jets my line?

A few questions up front protect your pipe and your budget:

  • Will you run a camera first to check the pipe material and condition?
  • Where will you go in: an outdoor cleanout, a roof vent or a toilet?
  • Is the camera inspection included in the price, and will I get the video?
  • What happens if the camera finds a break or collapsed section?
  • What's your CSLB license number? Check it on the CSLB license lookup.

Frequently asked questions

Can hydro jetting remove tree roots?
It can clear smaller roots and the grease and paper caught in them, and HomeGuide says jetting is often needed for large roots too. But roots return through the same crack or loose joint. If a camera shows roots at several joints, ask about lining or replacing that section so you aren't paying for jetting every year.
Can hydro jetting make a leak worse?
Yes, on a pipe that's already cracked, corroded or made of Orangeburg. Fixr warns that the high pressure can damage old pipes and cause leakage. That's why a camera inspection first is worth it on older homes. If the camera shows a break, fix it before jetting, or ask whether a gentler cable cleaning makes more sense.
How long does hydro jetting take?
Fixr says jetting a main sewer line usually takes about an hour, and up to 90 minutes for tougher clogs or extra cleanup. Add time for a camera inspection before and after. Access matters too: an outdoor cleanout is faster than going in through a roof vent or pulling a toilet.
